Münsterland
Eekels was granted the order from Scheepswerf Niestern Sander Repair BV in Farmsum for the refit of the electrical installation of the Münsterland. The ferry is owned by AG Ems and part of the Borkum line and is used together with Ostfriesland for the ferry services to the German island of Borkum.
The ship will be given a major refit with the aim of increasing sustainability and energy efficiency. For this purpose, the machine concept will be adapted to a diesel-gas-electric (Dual Fuel) propulsion system with 360° rotating electric pods. The conversion reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 20% and nitrogen and sulphur oxides by more than 90%. Fine dust will be almost completely avoided.
As more space is required for LNG fuel and propulsion, the stern will be extended by 15 m. This will make room for approx. 15 additional passenger cars, as well as two new lounges and a larger sun deck. All lounges will be upgraded and fitted with energy-efficient LED lighting.
The engineering of the new stern has already started. Around August 2020 the old stern will be replaced by the new stern. The trial run and delivery to the owner are scheduled for the end of February 2021.
Eekels is responsible for the engineering, supply and installation of equipment including new switchboards with power management, grid converter, propulsion drives, fire and gas detection systems and the Marpower alarm and monitoring system.
